Confidentiality & Discretion

Your business is your business.

Every business has information that isn’t meant for public consumption. Financial concerns, employee matters, operational problems, competitive pressures, and plans for the future can all involve sensitive information.

I understand that bringing an outside consultant into your business requires a certain amount of trust. You may be discussing matters you’ve never shared outside your organization, providing access to internal documents, or asking for an independent perspective on decisions that could affect your business.

I take that responsibility seriously.

My approach to confidentiality is built on discretion, respect for the information entrusted to me, and clear communication about how that information may be used.

Initial Conversations

You don’t need to become a client before expecting discretion.

Whether you’re making an initial inquiry, discussing a potential project, or exploring whether I can help, I approach those conversations with the understanding that the information you share may be sensitive.

Information provided during preliminary discussions is treated discreetly and is not used for unrelated business purposes.

If your situation involves particularly sensitive information, we can discuss appropriate confidentiality arrangements before you disclose it.

Client Information & Business Records

Depending on the nature of an engagement, I may need to review financial records, operational documents, business plans, internal communications, or other information relevant to the work.

My approach is guided by a few straightforward principles:

  • Purpose: Information is requested and used for legitimate purposes connected to evaluating or carrying out an engagement.

  • Access: Access to sensitive information should be limited to those who reasonably need it to perform the work.

  • Discretion: Client information is not shared publicly or used to promote my services without appropriate permission.

  • Care: Reasonable precautions should be taken when handling, storing, transmitting, and disposing of sensitive information.

  • Accountability: Questions or concerns about how information is being handled should be addressed openly and promptly.

The specific arrangements for handling confidential information may also be documented in a written consulting agreement.

Working With Outside Specialists

Some projects require expertise beyond my own. Depending on the assignment, that could involve designers, developers, accountants, legal professionals, technical specialists, or other qualified service providers.

When outside assistance is required, I remain your primary point of contact and coordinate the work.

Before sharing sensitive client information with an outside specialist, I will discuss the proposed involvement and obtain appropriate authorization. Where necessary, confidentiality obligations can be established as part of that arrangement.

The objective is to involve the right people without unnecessarily exposing your business information.

Technology, Digital Tools & Artificial Intelligence

Research, analysis, project management, and communications increasingly involve digital tools, including artificial intelligence.

These technologies can be useful, but their convenience does not eliminate the need for responsible information handling.

My approach is to consider the sensitivity of client information before using external platforms or AI-assisted tools. Where appropriate, information may be anonymized, summarized, or limited to what is necessary for a particular task.

I will not knowingly submit confidential client documents or sensitive business information to third-party AI services without appropriate authorization.

Where a project requires specific restrictions on technology, data sharing, or information storage, those requirements should be discussed and documented before the work begins.

Confidentiality Agreements

Some engagements call for more formal protections.

I’m open to entering into a reasonable Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) or including specific confidentiality provisions in a consulting agreement before receiving sensitive information.

Such agreements can establish what information is considered confidential, how it may be used, who may access it, and what obligations continue after the engagement ends.

The appropriate arrangement will depend on the nature of the project and the information involved.

Client Identity, Projects & References

I respect that some clients prefer to keep their business relationships private.

I will not publicly identify a client, disclose the details of a confidential engagement, or publish identifiable project information as a case study or testimonial without appropriate permission.

Where examples of past work are discussed, they may be presented in general or anonymized terms, provided they do not reveal confidential information.

Information Retention & Security

Information may need to be retained for legitimate business, administrative, contractual, or legal purposes.

I aim to limit unnecessary retention of sensitive client materials and use reasonable safeguards appropriate to the information and the tools involved.

No method of electronic storage or communication can be guaranteed to be completely secure. If a project requires particular security measures, access restrictions, retention periods, or deletion procedures, these should be agreed upon in writing.

Legal & Professional Obligations

Confidentiality is subject to applicable laws and lawful disclosure requirements.

There may be circumstances in which information must be disclosed to comply with a legal obligation, court order, or other binding requirement.

Nothing on this page is intended to override applicable law or the terms of a separately executed agreement.

A Commitment to Discretion

I believe a productive consulting relationship depends on open communication. That becomes difficult when a business owner is uncertain about how sensitive information will be handled.

My commitment is to approach those conversations professionally, explain when information needs to be shared, and respect the confidence placed in me.

You should be able to discuss a business challenge without wondering where that conversation will end up.

I’m happy to address those questions before we begin.
